Botanical flowers and fruit on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the outer forearm with pale open flowers, a round red fruit, green leaves and a trailing sprig of red blossom near the wrist. The linework is fine and the petals and leaves are shaded with soft grey and green washes. Muted reds and greens sit against the skin, and the design wraps diagonally up the arm.

Hettie had the grafting knife out before the carrier's cart had turned in at the gate. The old quince against the south wall had been waiting since February for its scions, and the sap was already moving under the bark, so the letter from Kent went into her apron pocket with the twine and stayed there while she worked.

Walter's box had arrived wrapped in wet sacking that smelled of cellar and cold stone. Inside were six cuttings, each tagged in his cramped capitals: a white rose he had bred from a hedge in Faversham, a late magnolia that would not forgive a frost, and a peach he swore would fruit on a northern wall if anyone was stubborn enough. Hettie was stubborn enough. She split the rootstock, cut the wedge, and bound each join with raffia until her fingers were sticky with resin.

By dusk five of the six were tied and sealed with clay. The sixth, a trailing sprig of something with small red blossoms, had gone grey at the cut end, and she nearly threw it on the bonfire. Instead she turned it in the lamplight and found a green line under the bark, no wider than a hair. Walter had never once in his life sent her a dead thing on purpose.

She bound the sprig to the quince's lowest branch and wrote WALTER on a card in her own square hand. Only then did she open the letter. It said the peach was for her and the rest were for the lane, which was what he had always said about anything he meant to share.
