Panther and crescent moon on both feet
Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two mirrored panther heads sit on the tops of the feet, outlined in bold black with stippled dotwork along the lower edges. Above them, a crescent moon and an ornate key-like scroll are drawn in solid black with swirling linework. Black and grey shading on the panthers is set against orange flame shapes and orange details, with the subject centred and the toes visible at the bottom of the frame.

You bring the narrowboat Juniper up to Cold Harbour lock an hour after dark, when the lock-keeper has gone home and left the gates standing open like a question. The paddle gear is stiff and your breath hangs in front of the lamp. A crescent moon sits low over the water, thin as a paring knife, and each time the boat rises in the chamber it seems to swing a little closer.

The key to the gate cabinet should hang on the hook in the cabin, where Ada Fenwick kept it for forty years before she sold the boat to you. You checked it that morning. Now there is only the nail and a loop of faded red string. Someone has taken it, or the river has, and the scrolled ironwork of the cabinet door stares back at you like a locked thing that knows exactly what it is guarding.
On the cabin side, the two black panthers Ada had painted on the planks seem to lean in the lamplight, one facing the bow, one the stern, their orange ears catching the stove glow through the window. You crouch and feel along the cabinet's underside until your fingers close on cold metal wedged against the bilge rim. The key. You turn it, the paddles grind, and the boat drops with a long sigh into the lower cut, where the moon finally breaks on the water and the two panthers stay exactly where you left them.
