Peacock tattoo across the top of a foot

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A peacock with a raised head and curving neck is tattooed across the top of a bare foot, with its tail fanned down towards the toes. The linework is bold and the feathers are shaded with soft greys, giving the bird depth and a slightly glossy finish. Turquoise, teal and green ink dominate, set against the pale skin and green grass in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bird had been screaming at the dawn gate for three days when Mistress Orla sent me down to the lower terraces with a bucket of barley and orders not to look at its tail. Everyone in the kingdom of Caddon Vale knew a peacock's eyes were not for counting. The king's bird, Sable, had come up from the marsh stock of Lenn and carried its head high on a neck like a green river, bending only to drink.

I looked anyway. Every feather of the fan had an eye, blue at the rim and green at the heart, and the lowest ones turned toward the grass whenever the bird stepped. I counted them the way my father counted sheep, under my breath, one to forty-one. On the forty-second, Sable lifted its head and stared at me with a grey, shadowed look, as though it knew I had been stealing.

The court said a peacock that watched you too long would take a year from your life. Mistress Orla found me at the wall with barley dust on my hands and boxed my ears, then went quiet, because she had counted too. Forty-two. By morning there were forty-three, and the steward was calling for the gardeners to bring a net.

I left the net on the gatepost and walked out along the causeway barefoot, the way my mother taught me to move through the reeds, and behind me the tail spread across the wet stones like a green dawn, every eye open and facing the road I had taken.
