Pastel alien head on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large alien head with a pale, domed skull, large dark eyes with white highlights, and a small nose and downturned mouth. The shading is soft and blended, with purple, pink and teal washes that fade into the pale skin tones. The left photo is a close view of the tattoo, and the right photo shows the full forearm down to the wrist and hand.

Dear Nell,

The big top came down in Margate on Tuesday, though nobody will admit it was the rain. Sid says the tent has rotted at the seams and the canvas will go to a scrapyard in Ramsgate for the price of a pint. What is left of us is three acrobats, a dog that thinks it is a lion, and the Pale Visitor, which is what Mr Oduya calls the pastel papier-mâché head he keeps in the wardrobe trunk. You remember it. Domed skull, eyes like wet plums, a mouth that looks sorry for everyone.

Last night I put it on for the kids who stayed behind to watch the lamps go out on the pier. One boy asked if it was from Mars. I told him it was from Hastings, which he didn't believe, and then I told him the truth, that it had come off a ship called the Lantern Rose in 1952 and nobody had ever claimed it. He nodded very seriously and asked whether it would be lonely in the trunk. I said it had been lonely for years and was getting used to it.

Mr Oduya wants to sell it to a collector in Brighton. I told him I would sooner he sold me. We have argued about it over tea until the pot went cold. He says the head has earned its retirement. I say a thing that has only ever been looked at deserves to be looked at a little longer.

So I am keeping it, and the trunk, and the last of the sawdust. If you come down before the autumn, bring your fiddle and we can play for the gulls. Come on the 9.14, and mind the dog, he bites.

Love, Maud
