Skull and spiral galaxy on the side ribs
Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A realistic skull fills the lower left of the design, with soft shading across the bone and a dark eye socket. Above and behind it, a spiral galaxy in purple, blue and red swirls out into a nebula with scattered stars. The tattoo sits on the side of the torso, with the skin curving around the design.

Tomas Vell found the skull in the canal mud below Brindle Lock on the night the gasworks went dark. It was cold as a river stone and heavier than it looked, and when he held it up to the lamp on the towpath, the eye sockets were not empty. Something turned slowly inside them, a pale whirl of dust and light, like milk stirred into dark tea.

His grandmother Ida took one look and told him to wrap it in his coat and not to speak to it. She had sold rags and bones off a barrow on Corporation Street for forty years, and she knew the old saying that every skull in the river is owed a sky. The dead go down to the water with their stars folded in their heads, she said, and the city lamps are too bright for them to unfold.
Tomas kept it on the windowsill above the chip shop. Each night the whirl grew wider, purple at the rim and red at the heart, until it seeped over the glass and the sodium lamps in the street went blue beneath it. Neighbours came up the stairs to look. Nobody complained. They just stood with their tea going cold and watched the stars move.
On the first clear night of October he carried it back down to the lock and set it on the wet stone edge. The galaxy slid out of the sockets like a held breath, turned once above the rooftops, and drifted north over the cranes and the cathedral spire. Tomas stood on the towpath until there was nothing left to see, then walked home under streetlamps that seemed, for once, a little dim.
