Dear Nell,

The peonies came up at the forest edge the week after you left, which Mr Hale says is a sign of nothing except a wet April. I have been pressing what I can in the big atlas in the back room, though the tulips refuse to lie flat and go papery at the edges instead. Mrs Corrigan wants a posy for her daughter's wedding in June, pinks and peaches only, she says, and nothing that looks like a funeral. I told her I had never once been asked for anything that wasn't for a funeral, which made her laugh.

Bring the good secateurs when you come back. The ones with the green handles are gone, and I suspect Tom Ashby took them to cut his hedge, the thief. I found a clutch of wild roses by the stile, the pale ones that go almost white at the middle, and a sprig of rowan so red it looked painted on. I set them in the shop window, and in the evening the lamplight through the glass made the whole display look like it was blushing.

Mrs Corrigan came back on Friday and cried a little, and said it was the first thing in the village that looked like her mother's garden. I did not tell her I had copied it from a picture in Granny's almanac, because a copy is still a true thing if you love it enough. Write when you can. Tell me whether the sea there is as grey as they say.

Yours, with muddy hands, Clare
