Dahlias and leaves on the thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two large dahlia blooms, one in deep purple and one in red, with black-shaded leaves trailing diagonally down the thigh. The petals are outlined in bold black lines and shaded with smooth gradients that fade from dark to light. The left panel shows the full design on the leg, and the right panel is a closer view of the flowers and leaves.

The lock keeper at Sallow Cut shouts something about the weir while you wrestle the bow line round the bollard, and the dahlias in the tubs along the roof rail nod as if they agree with him. Your mother bred them in a Kentish glasshouse, the purple ones dark as claret, the red ones the colour of a postbox, and she always said a dahlia only blooms properly when nobody fusses over it. You have fussed over every one of them since the funeral, watering at dawn and feeding them the fish blood she kept in a tin under the sink.

The boat is called Patience, which was her joke, because she never had any. You bought her from a man in Ely who wanted rid of her before the winter floods, and you spent a month scraping her hull while the gulls argued over the cut. Every evening you tie up somewhere new and walk the towpath with a torch, counting the gates, and every evening the river seems to know your name a little better. The only thing you have not learned is how to sleep through the night barges, their engines throbbing like a slow heart under the hull.
Yesterday a girl from the lock cottage came down the bank with a jam jar and asked if she could have a flower. You said no, because you were tired and the petals were the only thing that still looked as they should. Then you watched her sulk on the gunwale, and you went inside and cut the reddest bloom with your mother's secateurs. It rode in the jar on her palm all the way back up the path. When you looked at the pots this morning the purple had gone soft at the edges and the red had spread out bright as a lamp, and you understood you had been wrong about fussing.
Tonight you will untie the bow line and let the river take you on, the dahlias riding the rail like passengers who have paid in full.
