Peacock and paisley design on upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bird resembling a peacock with a detailed crest and tail is surrounded by paisley scrolls and flower motifs, spreading across the upper back. The fine, dense linework and filigree-like fills are rendered in dark brown tones with no colour ink. The design fills the centre of the frame against bare skin, with a fine chain visible at the neck and a red background behind.

The cone of paste has dried to a crust in your jacket pocket again, and you are late for the last tram because the woman in the courtyard off Brick Lane wanted the peacock to face the other way. You argued and lost. Now the lamps along the canal are coming on one by one as you walk, the cold getting through your thin shoes.

Your grandmother taught you that a peacock in paste is a promise of a marriage that will hold. She said to draw from the crest downward and never start at the tail, because the tail is where the blessing spills out. The paisley scrolls are seeds folded tight so nothing escapes. You have never once managed the order she wanted. Your lines wander, the flowers come out too fat, and the crest always looks a little startled, as if it has heard its own name called from another room.

At the corner by the shuttered fabric shop, a boy is selling roasted chestnuts from a tin drum, and he watches your stained fingers with open interest. You tell him about a bird that tried to carry the whole night sky in its tail and dropped one star at every step, and that is why every paisley is stippled with dots. He doesn't believe you. You didn't expect him to.

At the tram shelter you pull your sleeve back to check the drying paste, and find a small peacock on your own wrist, one you drew without meaning to. Its crest is turned toward the lights of the last tram, and the rain is starting to wash its edges soft.
