Black lace-style ornamental tattoo on a back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the full length of the back in intricate black ink, with filigree scrollwork, paisley-like motifs and a mandala-style central panel. Fine linework and dense stippled detail create a lace effect, with soft grey shading giving depth to the larger shapes. The design is shown in a symmetrical composition against a dark background, with the subject's face out of frame.

You have been scraping frost off the taproom window since the lamps were lit, because Mrs Abernethy swears the patterns mean the thaw is late and the coach will not come through. The glass grows its ferns faster than you can clear them, scrolls unrolling from the corners like the cuffs of a lace collar, and by midnight the whole pane is filigree with a rose at its heart.

Upstairs, the guest in room four has been ringing for hot water since eight. You carry the can up the narrow stair, knocking your knuckle on the banister every third step, and the traveller who opens the door is a woman with a pen behind her ear and a ledger open on the bed. She asks what the frost looks like from outside. You tell her it looks like someone tried very hard to finish something in the dark.

She laughs, then doesn't. She has spent the evening copying the window's patterns onto paper, mandala after mandala, because the lacemakers of her village used to work the same shapes from memory and she fears they will be lost when the old women die. She shows you a drawing: a central medallion with paisleys drifting out from it like leaves in a current. Your hands are red from the cold, and you realise the sketch is the same as the pane.

By morning the rose has melted from the glass, leaving only a damp ring where the sun got through. The woman has gone on the early coach, the ledger left on the table with a note tucked inside the cover: keep the drawing for the next hard winter. You fold it into your apron and go back to scraping, and the ferns come back before you reach the far corner.
