Peacock tattoo on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A peacock with its head raised and tail feathers fanning down and to the left, drawn with dark outlines and filled in with layered greens and teals. Silver and grey shading and soft highlights sit on the head and upper body, while thin, branching sprigs trail beside the tail. The tattoo is photographed from behind on a bare upper back, with the shoulder blade and part of the neck visible.

The peacock had got into the marquee before the vicar, and by the time I found it, the string quartet had stopped pretending and was playing the Blue Danube at the bird instead. It stood on the trestle where the tea urn was supposed to go, head tilted, judging the sandwiches. Nobody had told me I'd be the one to shoo it out, but I was the florist, and florists are apparently the people who handle animals, cake knives and grief.

The bird belonged to Vivian Hollins, the bride's gran, who had kept peacocks at the farm since her husband bought the first pair as a joke in 1963. "Don't wave your arms," she told me, not looking up from her hat. "He thinks you're a rival." So I stood still with a bunch of wet sweet peas while the creature considered me, then slowly, with the terrible dignity of a bishop, lifted its tail and let it open behind him. The light came through the marquee walls and the whole fan went silver and green, every eye turning to the groom, who had frozen mid-sentence.
The bride said afterwards that it was the first photograph she'd liked all day. The bird walked her up the lawn to the lych gate as if it had been hired for the job, and at the gate it dropped one feather at my feet. I still have it in my kitchen drawer, next to the good scissors, where I keep the things that turned out better than planned.
