Pen sketch of two howling wolves

Mixed · Flash

A pen drawing of two stylised canine heads, one above the other, with open mouths and sharp teeth. The linework is loose and sketchy, with black ink for outlines and fur strokes, and blue, purple, pink and orange ink added as shading. Curling swirls sit around the heads, and the drawing rests on a spiral notebook beside coloured pens.

Old Hettie Pryor had kept sheep on Carrick Fell for forty winters, and in all that time she had never heard the wolves sing together. Her husband had told her they were gone from Britain before his grandfather was born, so when the first howl rolled down off the scree that November, she set her bucket down in the yard and stood listening until her fingers stiffened.

Two voices traded lines across the dark like quarrelling neighbours. The low one was ragged, the colour of old chimney smoke. The high one came over the ridge pale as hoarfrost, and its notes curled at the edges the way breath curls off a cold window. Hettie counted the answers and lost count at nine. Each time the pale voice climbed, the smoky one dropped beneath it and held, so the whole valley hummed like a struck pan.

By spring the lambs were fat and nobody had been taken. Her son wanted to set traps, and she told him to fetch the blue ink instead. She sat at the kitchen table with a pad on her knee and tried to draw the two heads one above the other, mouths open, the fur going up in strokes. The lines would not keep still. In the end she gave up on the lines and let the colour run where the howls had been: purple where the low voice had broken, orange where the high one had caught fire. When she finally looked up, the lamp had burned to a stub and the window was blue with dawn, and somewhere out on the fell, faintly, they answered.
