Wolf head pen drawing in a geometric frame
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A wolf head faces to the right, built from dense hatched and cross-hatched fine lines that describe the fur, ears and muzzle. A dashed polygon outline of overlapping diamonds and triangles sits behind the head, and a dotted stipple fills the lower left corner. The drawing is in black ink on white paper, with a Micron pen lying across the bottom right.

The surveyors had marked the old tram depot with dashed chalk lines, and by the time Mrs Okafor came down Canal Street with her lamp, the lines had already been half rubbed out by rain. Nobody in Ashford Wharf liked the depot. It stood at the point where three streets met at angles no builder would choose, and the lamplighters said the corners kept their own hours. Still, the wolf had been living in the cellar for a month before anyone wrote to the council about it.

She found him sitting upright among the rusted rails, his grey ruff full of soot, watching the gap in the bricks where the light came in. He did not growl. He turned his long head to the left, the way a man checks a clock he does not trust, and waited for her to say what she had come to say.
She had brought a tin of mutton scraps and a question. The question was how a wolf had come to be inside a box of lines, when every other beast in the city lived in the open. He told her, in the slow way wolves tell things, that the lines were fences the old draughtsmen had drawn around the real city, and that whoever stepped between them came out somewhere a little sharper at the edges. He had stepped through at the third corner. The hatching on his coat was where the wind had got into him.
She left the tin and walked home by the longest route, counting the corners. At the last one the stone was stippled with tiny dark dots, like frost on a window, and the streetlamp hummed a note she thought she recognised. Her own shadow stretched out across the pavement in three directions at once, and she stepped carefully over it.
