Pencil sketch of a bird in flight
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a small bird in flight, with wings spread and a long tail of trailing feathers that fades out to the lower right. The linework is light and sketchy, with soft grey shading on the wings and body and a few scattered ink-like dots around the lower wing. The image is entirely black and grey, shown on textured paper with two pencils resting at the top right.

The innkeeper's daughter had given up on the road before the snow stopped, and so the bird came to the shutters instead of the travellers. It was a small brown thing with its wings held wide, as if it had been caught halfway through a word and could not finish it. Mrs Ashdown opened the casement to let the cold in, because her husband had always said a bird at the glass was a bad sign and she wanted to prove him wrong.

The bird had a thread tied to one leg, red wool gone grey with damp, and knotted to it a folded slip of paper no bigger than a fingernail. Nobody in the taproom could read the hand. The miller said it was the Lowther boy's writing, the carter swore it was a sum, and old Tam by the fire said that a message which travels on feathers is never really meant for the people who find it. They argued until the candles guttered, and the bird sat on the sill and shook snow from its tail, which trailed out behind it like smoke from a snuffed wick.
Mrs Ashdown untied the paper at last. It said only: the bridge is open, come before the thaw. She understood then that the bird had not been lost at all. It had been flying the wrong way on purpose, to bring someone back who had gone up to the high pasture and not returned. She took a lantern and a coil of rope out into the cold, and the bird rose ahead of her into the dark, its long feathers brushing the white, and she followed it for the rest of the night.
