Barn owl in flight sketch
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A barn owl with heart-shaped face and wings raised high is drawn in black ink on textured white paper. The linework is fine and precise, with stippled dotwork shading across the feathers and body. A hand holding a pencil is at the lower right, with the pencil tip close to the owl's feet.

The culvert under the Kessler Wash road had been dry for eleven days, and the barn owl had moved into it on the third. You know this because you have parked the survey van at the cattle grid every evening since, waiting for the light to go flat and grey, and watching the pale shape drop from the fence wire into the dust. Your supervisor wants a bird count for the county form. You want the owl.

You fill a whole sketchbook with it. The heart-shaped face, the dark eyes set like buttons in a pale mask. The drawing you keep returning to has the wings raised high, because that is the moment it leaves the post and everything about it goes quiet. You work in fine pen and then stipple the feathers one dot at a time, since the bird will never hold still long enough for hatching. You learn to draw the feet last, once the body has landed somewhere you can trust.
On the final evening the sky breaks over the ridge and the wash fills brown in twenty minutes. You drive back with the wipers slapping and the sketchbook on the passenger seat. At the cattle grid the owl sits on the post with its wings folded like a shut book. You stop the van. You don't reach for the door.
It opens its wings and climbs, and you watch it go before you start the engine. In the morning you finish the drawing from memory: wings raised, feet tucked, the stipple thickest under the belly where the rain ran off. You leave the book open on the seat for whoever comes to count the birds next.
