Penguin tattoo on the upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A penguin in profile, facing right with its head raised, is tattooed on the outer upper arm. The linework is fine and the body is built up with soft grey shading that gives the feathers texture, with clean white highlights on the chest and face. The penguin sits centrally on the arm against a plain skin background, while a dark sleeve and an orange garment with a yellow star graphic appear at the edge of the frame.

The penguin came up the stairwell of Calder House the winter the lifts broke, and nobody agreed on where it had come from. Mrs Okafor on the ninth floor said it walked out of the sea at Margate and rode the train with its hat off. Her grandson said it was a stowaway from the zoo. Nobody could say how it got past the caretaker, who slept by the boiler most nights with his radio on.

It would not go down and it would not come in. It stood on the flat roof with its chin raised and its back to the wind, looking east at the grey river as if a ship were due. The children on the fourth floor carried up fish from the chippy on Mill Lane and left it on the parapet in greaseproof paper. The penguin ate every scrap and never once looked at the children, only at the water.

In March the lift came back on. The caretaker said the first thing he saw when the doors opened on the ground floor was the penguin, waiting by the bins, facing the car park with its head held high. It did not look back at the building. Mrs Okafor watched from her window as it waddled to the kerb, paused at the edge of the road, and slipped away between the parked vans towards the river.

Next morning a single white feather lay on the ninth-floor landing, just outside her door, neat as a folded letter. She kept it in her coat pocket the rest of that winter. When anyone asked about the penguin she said it had gone back to the sea, where it had always meant to be.
