Colour tattoo of a running red fox with a black-tipped tail on the outer thigh, drawn in a illustrative style.

Running fox on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A red fox runs across the outer thigh, shown mid-stride with its tail raised and one foreleg lifted. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with the orange and red fur built up in layered strokes and a white underbelly and cheek. The fox sits on a plain skin background beneath a floral skirt, with a warm wooden floor in the blurred backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox has already gone over the wall by the time the bell stops ringing, and the Queen's huntsmen are still arguing about whose horse should go first. You are the one with the lantern. Nobody asked you to carry it, but the chandler's girl always ends up holding whatever nobody else wants, and tonight that is light enough to see the frost on the cobbles of Mirrowmere.

You follow the prints down past the tanneries, where the river smells of lime and wet wool. The fox does not run so much as lift itself off the ground, one foreleg folded beneath its chest, tail streaming behind it like a banner someone forgot to furl. Every time you reach a corner it has already turned. Every time you call out, a shutter bangs somewhere above you and a dog answers, so you learn to stop calling.

At the old ferry steps the prints simply end. There is only black water and a single red hair caught on a nail in the post. You crouch and pick it up. It is warm, which makes no sense at all, and when you look up the fox is standing on the far bank in the lantern light, watching you with the patience of something that has never once been lost.

You understand then that the hunt was never really for the fox. The Queen wanted a creature that could cross any border in her kingdom without asking leave, and you have spent the whole night chasing exactly that. You tuck the hair into your sleeve, set the lantern down on the step, and walk home the long way, slowly, leaving the light for anyone who might need to follow.
