Black and grey peony tattoo with a bud and leaves on the inner forearm, framed by outlined triangles and dotted lines, in a dotwork and botanical style.

Peony and bud with geometric triangles on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large peony bloom with a smaller closed bud above it, both surrounded by layered leaves, sits on the forearm. The petals are drawn with bold black outlines and soft grey shading, with stippled dots adding texture to the leaves and flower centre. Thin solid and dotted triangular lines run behind the botanical motif, and the image is shown against a plain white brick wall.

Kallista, you will scold me for writing on the wax again, but the stylus is the only thing in Pergamon that has not been sold twice. The surveyors' guild has me measuring the new cistern under the agora, and every line I draw is a triangle, because the master says a triangle will not sag when the stone settles. I have drawn so many that I dream in them. Last night the sides of one bent into the shape of a garden gate.

Hear the odd part. The old physician Paeon, who kept the herb beds behind the temple of Asklepios, died in the spring, and his widow sold me a basket of roots at a fair price because she wanted her husband's ground cleared. Among the roots was a peony, its leaves cut like the teeth of a saw, and beside it a bud still shut tight, pale at the seam and bowed over like a man who has listened too long. She told me the flower opens only for someone who sits with it at dawn. I laughed at her. I took the bud anyway, and I have carried it wrapped in damp linen against my ribs for six days.

Here is the turn. This morning the master found a crack in my drawing, and I cut the faulty line out with the blade. In the gap I saw the bud had begun to split along its seam. Not a bloom yet, only a thin crimson line where the dark leaves part. I sat on the cistern step with the sun on my neck and waited, the way Paeon's widow said, and I did not get up for an hour.

Send word whether mother's knee is better. I will send the bloom when it opens, or the bud when it dies, whichever the gods decide first.
