Peony tattoo on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large peony bloom with layered, ruffled petals fills the frame, with a stippled dotwork centre and several pointed leaves around its edges. The work uses fine black linework with dense shading and dotted texture to build depth in the petals, and the ink is entirely black and grey. The skin is pale and the tattoo is photographed against a white paper towel background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boats had been out three nights when Maud Pellow went down to the shingle with a spade and a sack of wet sand. Her husband's boat, the Good Intent, was somewhere past the Mewstone, and the fleet had gone without a light showing. Behind her the cottages of Gull Row leaned into the wind like men outside a closed pub. She dug a hole above the tideline, where the peony her mother had carried up from Penzance in a tin bath still grew against the wall.

Her mother had said a peony keeps a house from drowning, though nobody on the Row had ever asked her why. The bloom was as big as a fist and heavy, its petals folded over one another like the frills on a Sunday collar, and at its heart the stamens sat in a dark dotted knot. Maud cut three stems and pressed their leaves, sharp as knife points, into the wet sand. Then she wrapped the roots in oilcloth and tied them with fishing line, the way her father had tied his nets.

On the fourth morning the Good Intent came round the point low in the water, her hold full and her crew singing badly. Maud did not run down to meet her. She stood at the window with the kettle on and counted the blooms on the sill, which had opened in the night though she had not seen them move. Each one was dense and dark at its centre, like a stone someone had polished for a long time.

Her husband came up the path with his cap in his hands and asked whether anybody had told her they would be late. Nobody had. She poured the tea, and the peonies went on opening in the window while the rain came in sideways over the harbour wall.
