Peony and hummingbird on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A pink peony with a bud and green foliage runs up the skin, with a green and red hummingbird perched on the stem below the bloom. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients on the petals, feathers and leaves. Vivid pinks, greens and reds dominate against the pale skin, and the design fills the frame on the side of the upper thigh.

Mother, the peony finally opened this morning, the one we carried up from the cold store before the last dome sealed. I stood at the glass with Tomasz and we counted the petals the way you taught me, and there were forty-one before I lost count from crying, which I know is not a scientific result.

The hummingbird came in on the vent draught from the lower ring, a little green thing with a red throat and sooty grey wings, and it went straight to the bloom as if someone had posted it a letter. Tomasz says the birds were engineered for the pollination rota and this one simply slipped its cage. I say nobody engineers a creature to hang in the air like that, stopping dead over a flower to argue with the wind.
The bud beside the bloom is still closed, a tight pink fist pinned to the stem. I have tied a card to it with thread: the date, the count, and a reminder that the bird takes sugar water from the blue dropper, never the amber one, which made the last one sick.
Tomorrow the scrubbers go to night cycle and the vents shut for three days. I have moved the stem into the nursery bay under the one good lamp. If the bird is still perched there when the air comes back, I will write and tell you it chose us, and you can call me sentimental as you always did. I will not argue. The petals are still forty-one.
