Peony and leaves across neck and shoulder

Fine line · Neck · Mixed · Photo

A large peony bloom with a smaller bud and several leaves wraps from the side of the neck over the shoulder. The linework is fine and grey, with soft pink shading filling the petals of the main flower. The composition follows the curve of the neck and shoulder, with the leaves trailing down toward the upper back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The peonies had opened in the van, which Dennis said was their own fault for being greedy, and by seven the stalls on Harrow Lane were dripping grey. Ruth tipped the buckets under the awning and watched the pink heads nod in the drizzle, each bloom as heavy as a fist, its petals going translucent at the edges where the water found them.

Dennis wanted them binned. He had a lad from the council coming at nine to check the drains, and a trestle of bulbs he could sell in his sleep. But Ruth had a regular, a woman who came every Saturday for a single stem to put by her sink, and who had never once asked for a discount. Ruth stripped the leaves from a bud, pinched its tight green cap, and tucked it into a paper cone with a sprig of eucalyptus that smelt of cough sweets.

The bell over the door went at ten past nine, and the woman came in shaking her umbrella like a dog. She didn't say good morning. She put a coin on the counter, studied the largest bloom, the one pale at its heart and blushing outward like a bruise that had decided to be pretty, and said, 'That one, then.' Ruth wrapped it in brown paper, tied it with garden twine, and set the bud beside it.

'Put the bud in the window where the light gets it,' Ruth said. 'It'll open by Thursday.' The woman turned the parcel in her hands, water running off the paper onto the lino. 'Then I'll have to come back for the rest,' she said, and for the first time all week the rain sounded like it was on Ruth's side.
