The frost came in the second week of December and took everything I had planted out by the cold frame. Everything except Mum's old rose by the back gate, which has gone on opening one petal at a time as if nobody told it the season had turned. I went out this morning in my good coat and cut the longest stem I could reach, the one with the bud still tight in the middle like a fist, and brought it in to stand in the blue jug.
Dad saw it when he came in for his tea. He didn't say anything about the roses, and I didn't either, but he stood at the sink a long while with his hands in the washing-up water, watching the petals go from pink to that deep plum colour at the edges where the light from the window reaches them.
By Thursday the bud had opened and the water in the jug had gone faintly rose-coloured, and Dad has started setting his mug down beside it each morning instead of on the table. I think he's counting the days it lasts, the way we used to count the frosts before the lambing.
I'm sending you a snip of the stem in wet newspaper with this letter, so you can root it on your windowsill in Leeds. Keep it out of the draught. Write and tell me if it takes.
