Perched parrot on a branch

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A parrot with a grey head, yellow eye and red spots stands side-on on a branch, with leaves sprouting beside its feet. Bold black outlines define the beak and feathers, and the wings are shaded with scale-like rows in teal, red, orange and yellow. The design fills the frame against pale skin and a blue denim background.

Sit closer, you, where the wind can't reach the fire. This is Harrowmere, and the ivy has had the north wall these two hundred winters, so mind the loose stones on the stair. The old lord kept a grey-headed parrot in his solar, a bird with an amber eye that missed nothing and forgot nothing. They called her Tibbet. She sat on a bough of ash nailed to the window frame and could say the tithe roll faster than the steward could read it.

Then the siege came up the valley. The gate-ravens had gone into the pot long since, and the last pigeon followed in the first week of frost, so only Tibbet could still fly out. The lord tied a scrap of linen to her leg and sent her over the enemy lines at dusk, asking the relief force from Carrick to march by the drove road. She came back at dawn with a red feather gone from her throat and a word in her beak that was not hers.

The captain of the besiegers had been drinking with the steward's nephew, and the nephew, as young men do, had boasted of the watchword for the sally gate. Tibbet had perched on the captain's tent pole and listened, as parrots do. Now she sat on the lord's arm and said that word in the nephew's voice, cheerful and clear, while the bolts at the postern were already sliding back.

The lord heard it and did not open the gate. He had the nephew taken in chains to the courtyard before noon, and he had Tibbet's perch carried back to the solar. Look at the window now, if the light's right. You can still see where the leaves grew from that bough, green as ever, for those who know where to look.
