Traditional owl tattoo on the top of a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a traditional-style owl perched on the top of a bare foot, with its toes visible at the bottom of the frame. The owl has bold black outlines, green-centred eyes ringed in red, yellow-tipped feathers and blue-grey scalloped plumage. Small green leaves, dark dots and a branch-like line fill the space around it against a dark background.

The owl had nested in the roof of the old customs hut at Harrowgate Bridge for longer than anyone on the rota could remember, and it had never once turned its head for a lorry. You learned that on your first night shift, when the lamps buzzed and the river ran black below the barrier. The bird sat on the crossbeam with its feathers fanned like a sheaf of wheat, green-centred eyes ringed in red and fixed on the road, and it watched every vehicle without blinking. You called it Sallow, because the old hands did, and because nobody had ever told you not to.

Just after two, a handcart came up from the water with a single man pushing it. Apple crates, bruised and stacked high, a rope knotted round them twice. He said he had nothing to declare, and his voice was steady in the way that makes you check your own pulse. Sallow lifted both wings a little and turned her head slowly towards the cart, as if she had heard her name said somewhere far off.
You opened the top crate. Apples, yes, and under them a bed of wet paper, maps of country that had been redrawn so many times the rivers ran uphill. Your hand stopped above the bottom crate. Sallow hooted once, low and rolling, and the man breathed out like a kettle taken off the flame. You stamped his papers PASSED and watched him wheel the cart down into the dark on the far bank.
In the morning the hut was cold and the barrier was up. On your desk lay one yellow feather, pinned flat by the stamp pad, and the tally board had a new name chalked at the bottom in handwriting you did not recognise until you looked closely. It was your own.
