Phoenix across a full back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A large phoenix with spread wings and an open beak covers most of the upper and mid back, rendered in red, orange and yellow. Its flame-like tail feathers trail down the lower back in sweeping ribbons edged with teal and purple. The bold, smooth colour blends and layered feather detail fill the composition from shoulder to hip.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stove had gone out again by the time Nell tied up below Braunston lock, and the cold came up through the floorboards as if it had a grievance to settle. She knelt on the rag rug in her coat and raked the ash with the poker, scattering grey dust over the brass rail her father had polished every Sunday of his life. Nothing but the smell of wet soot and the tick of rain on the roof hatch.

Her father had painted the cabin sides himself, the summer before his chest gave out. A bird on the port side, all wing and temper, its tail thinning into smoke that ran the length of the boat. He used to say no bird burned those colours, and he would dab at the yellow with his thumb until she told him to leave it alone. She never told him she liked it wrong.

She found the coal at the back of the grate when she had given up looking. One orange eye under a skin of grey. She cupped her breath over it, then her hands, then worked the bellows he had made from a bicycle pump, and the fire came up slowly and then all at once, red at the root and yellow at the tips, throwing light out through the hatch onto the black water. A heron lifted off the towpath without hurry, and the reflection of the flames slid along the cut beside the boat like something alive and running.

By the time the kettle sang she had the door propped open and the stove roaring, her coat steaming on its hook. The lock keeper would come in the morning with his clipboard and his questions about mooring fees, and the boat would still smell of smoke. But the bird on the side was catching the lamplight, wings spread, as if it had only been waiting for someone to open the door.
