The frost had taken the trough again by the time Ada came out with the bucket, and she had to break the skin of ice with the heel of her boot before the ewes could drink. Behind her the barn stood black against a sky the colour of pewter, its roof half gone since the August storm, and nobody had yet found the money to fix it.

Her father had always said the old barn would burn someday, and in January it did, on a night so cold the hose froze before the engine arrived. Ada watched from the kitchen window in her nightdress, hands wrapped around a mug of tea that had gone cold, while the flames climbed the rafters in slow banners of orange and violet, then a green that shouldn't have been possible, like the sea under moonlight.
In the morning there was nothing left but a smoking shell and a heap of charred timber. Ada went through the ash with a shovel, looking for the tin box where her mother kept the deeds, and instead found a long tail of blue-grey feathers pressed into the snow, unmarked and oddly warm to the touch. She knew no hen had shed them. She carried them to the house and stood them in a jar on the windowsill, where they caught the light like something that had only been resting.
By March the ewes were lambing and the new roof was going on, and nobody mentioned the feathers. But the lambs came easily that year, and every dawn Ada opened the kitchen shutters to check the frost, and every dawn the jar held its colours a little brighter than the day before, as though something under the snow was learning to fly again.
