Phoenix full sleeve in black and grey

Japanese · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large bird, resembling a phoenix, spreads its wings across the shoulder and upper arm and continues down the forearm. The feathers are rendered with dense, layered linework and soft grey shading, with fine swirling cloud forms in the background. The image shows two angles of the same sleeve, with a plain white vest top and a tattoo studio behind, and it is shot in black and grey ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The oven door had stuck again, so Nadia Orr was still wrestling it at ten to five with her forearm braced against the brick when the first grey flakes lifted off the banked embers and drifted up past the flour sacks like something unpacking itself. Her father had called the old fire the bird. He said you never let it go out, not on the morning after his funeral, and certainly not because the wind had got into the flue.

Sunday's starter had gone flat in its crock, a grey skin on top like a bad burn. She had thrown half of it out and fed the rest with rye and warm water, muttering at it the way he used to, and by four it was sighing up through the cloth. Now the bread was proving in the baskets along the back wall, humped and pale under their tea towels, and the window over the sink had begun to show a seam of pewter where the day was getting in.

Ned from the wholesale van knocked at half past, early as ever, and found her standing in the mouth of the oven with a peel in one hand and the heat on her face. Go on, she told him, pull the shutter. He looked at the loaves as she slid them in and said they looked like they were trying to get out. She said that was the idea. Each one split along its scored line with a sound like a sheet being shaken out, and the crust went from pale to deep amber in the time it took her to count to forty.

By six the racks were full and the bakery smelled of nothing but warm wheat. Through the window the sky over the car park had gone the colour of ash on a grate, and above the chimney a long streak of light fanned out in layers, feather over feather, as if something had shaken itself awake on the rooftops. Nadia wiped her hands on her apron, lifted the first loaf to tap its base, and it rang hollow and bright, the way it was supposed to.
