Mandala and lotus full sleeve
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full arm sleeve shows stacked mandala medallions, lotus flowers and geometric bands. The linework is fine and the shading is built largely from dense dotwork stippling, with soft grey gradients in the petals. The design is entirely black and grey and wraps from the upper arm down to the wrist against a plain pale wall.

Nobody at Hollin Ferry Crossing believes me when I say the medallions were the first thing I counted. The lost-property drawer under the Customs window held eleven hundred and six items when I took it over, and most of them were gloves. The sealed tin came in on a wet Tuesday in March, a flat round thing with a lotus pressed into its lid, each petal built from hundreds of tiny dents, as if someone had knocked the metal patiently with a needle for a month.

The label said only 'found, coach park, bay nine.' I knew the pattern before I opened it, because my grandmother kept her thread in a tin like that, and the rings inside were stacked the same way, one circle smaller than the next, like paper doilies nested in a drawer. Tucked under the lid was a folded slip of tracing paper, pricked with a grid of ink dots, and a line in pencil: Pass the lotus to whoever stamps next. Don't wait for the bus.
I spent a week with a magnifier trying to learn who had drawn the grid. The dots sat exactly four millimetres apart, which is how a careful hand works when it has nothing to hurry for. On Friday a man in a grey coat came to the window, asked for the tin by its colour, and didn't open it. He only looked at the lid and tapped it twice, the way you knock on a door you already know.
He walked out into the rain with the tin under his arm. I kept the grid. It's taped inside my drawer now, and every so often I prick a dot in the margin, four millimetres from the last, and wait to see who comes asking.
