Phoenix in flight design
Black and grey · Flash
A detailed pencil drawing of a phoenix rising with both wings spread wide and its tail feathers curling below. The linework is fine and sketchy, with layered shading across the feathers and body to create depth. The image is entirely black and grey on a plain white background, with the bird centred and filling most of the frame.

You learn the pass before you learn the bird. Every October the wind comes off the Carrick ridge sideways, and the lamp at Scarth Col has to be trimmed by hand before dusk, or the carters coming down from the quarries walk off the shelf in the dark. Your uncle Edwin taught you the wick with a bent nail and a bad joke about his knees. He never mentioned the grey bird that roosts in the rock above the lamp, the one with the long tail feathers that trail like smoke over the edge.

The first time you see it, it is simply there, wings spread across the whole sky above the col, and then it drops like a dropped coat and is gone. The carters say it is a sign. Edwin says it is a kestrel with ideas. You stop arguing with either of them the night the lamp gutters out in a squall and you are halfway up the ladder with your hands full of cold brass, and the bird comes down through the rain and sits on the rail beside you, feathers fanning, close enough to feel the heat coming off it.
You relight the lamp with its breath. You are not proud of that. You are not sure it happened. In the morning there is a single long feather tangled in the iron cage, pale as a bone and banded like a pencil shading, and you tuck it into your coat and walk the carters down the ridge with the sun coming up behind them, pointing out every rock they might have missed.
