Phoenix in flight line drawing
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A phoenix with wings spread wide sits above a long tail of flowing feathers that curls and tapers towards the bottom of the page. The design is drawn in thin, continuous blue ink lines with small curls and flicks for feather detail, and no shading is used. The bird is centred on a plain white background, with the tail forming a vertical composition.

The ink in the old fountain pen had dried to a blue crust, so Marisol thinned it with rainwater from the cistern and drew the bird again on the back of the ferry timetable. Her grandmother had always said a phoenix was only a bird that had decided not to stay down. Marisol did not believe that, but she believed in the wings, which she could draw without looking, the feathers lifting one after another like a sigh.

The island had lost its harbour office in the winter storm, and with it the ledger where people wrote down who had gone across and who had not come back. Now there was only the tide and the lamp on the headland, and a boy named Teo who came each morning to ask if the drawing was finished yet. She told him it was not. The tail was the difficult part. It had to fall away from the body in long curling streamers, each one thinner than a thread, and each one ending in a small flick, as if the feather had changed its mind about being a feather.
On the last night of the month she finally drew the final curl at the bottom of the page, and the line came out so fine it nearly disappeared into the paper. Teo leaned over the table and traced it with one finger, leaving no mark at all. Outside, the lamp swept its slow arc across the water. Marisol folded the timetable in half, then in half again, and slid it under the door of the empty harbour office, where somebody would find it in the morning and know that the boats were still running.
