Pin-up warrior with a bird on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a pin-up style warrior woman in a plumed helmet, holding a spear and resting on a large shield, with a bird of prey perched on her shoulder. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the skin and metal and deep darks in the helmet and feathers. The figure runs diagonally across the side of the ribs, with the bird and plume filling the upper edge of the design.

The rain has been coming sideways across the car park since seven, and by nine the tarpaulins over the book stalls sag like wet sails. You are nursing a cup of tea gone cold under the awning of the costume stall, where Mrs Okafor sells tin helmets and plastic spears to amateur theatre groups. She tells you the hawk on the fishmonger's pole has been watching you all morning, and you tell her hawks don't watch anybody, they just wait.

The pin-up print is pinned to the back of her van, a faded calendar page from 1952 that somebody's uncle brought back from Naples. A woman in a plumed helmet leans on a shield the size of a cartwheel, spear laid across her knee, looking over her shoulder as if she has heard her name called from far off. Mrs Okafor wants twelve pounds for it. You want it because the paper is still glossy where the varnish held, and because you recognise the look: she is about to step down and leave the whole crowd behind.
At half past ten the hawk comes down. It is not the fishmonger's bird but a grey thing with a torn jess, and it lands on the van roof and hops along the gutter with the rain running off its feathers. Mrs Okafor shrieks, the crowd scatters toward the sausage van, and you stand still with the print in your hands. The bird fixes you with one amber eye, ruffles, and settles on your shoulder as though you were a perch it chose years ago.
You pay the twelve pounds. Walking home with the calendar page under your coat and the hawk gripping your collar, you realise the warrior never needed the shield at all. She only needed someone to take her out of the weather.
