Winged bird with trailing feathers on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large bird with its wing spread upward and its talons gripping at the lower edge of the wing is shown on the upper back. Shading and fine feather detail are rendered in black and grey, and the long tail feathers curl down towards the lower back, each ending in an ornamental swirl. Thin black ornamental scrollwork sits beside the tail feathers and is set against the pale skin.

The bird came down off the gasworks roof the week the trams stopped running, and nobody in Calder Street could say where it had roosted before that. My mother swore it was an eagle that had lost its way from the moors. Old Tobias at the pawn shop said it was no eagle at all, but a thing that burned in the wrong direction, because when it lifted off the chimney the sky behind it went the colour of a struck match.

I was the lamplighter's boy, so I was out after midnight with the ladder and the pole. I saw it most nights after that, perched on the iron cross of the lamp at the corner of Mill Lane, its talons hooked round the lip of the glass as if it meant to keep the light for itself. Its tail came down behind it in two long feathers that trailed over the cobbles, and at each end the barbs curled into a little scroll, like the ironwork on a gate nobody had ever finished painting.
One night in February the fog came up off the canal so thick I could not see my own boots. I heard wings instead, slow and heavy, and then the bird was on the wall above me, close enough to smell of coal smoke and cold metal. It did not want my ladder or my pole. It waited until I had lit the lamp, then bent its head and tapped the glass once, twice, until the flame stood straight and bright above the fog.
In the morning the lamp at Mill Lane burned all day, and the bird was gone north over the chimneys toward the sea. Tobias keeps one black feather in a jar on his counter, curled at the tip like a question nobody has got round to asking yet.
