Pine forest fading to dotwork on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of pine tree silhouettes runs across the upper forearm and wrist, with solid black trees at the top. Below the treeline, the ink breaks into fine dots that grow sparser towards the hand, creating a soft gradient. The image is a two-panel photograph of the same wrist, with the left panel showing the tattoo and the right panel focusing on the hand and the fading dotwork.

Hush now, the lamp's nearly spent, so you'll have to lean in. Ottoline Frayne ran Frayne's Travelling Wonder for forty-one years, and in the last season she pitched the tent at the edge of Harrow Wood because no other field would have her. The pines came right up to the guy ropes, black and shoulder to shoulder, so close that the sawdust ring looked like a bite taken out of the forest.

The trouble began with the audiences. Fewer each night. A boy would walk in from the village, sit on the cold benches, and watch the clown fall off his bicycle without once laughing. Ottoline asked him why. He said the trees had the better show. She thought that was impertinence until she walked the perimeter one dusk and saw it for herself: the dark trunks at the top, and below them the light thinning out, the ground breaking into a scatter of tiny specks, each one a lantern somebody had forgotten to put out. Every night there were fewer specks, and every night the wood crept an inch nearer the canvas.
So she sold the elephant, then the calliope, then the good red wagon. On the final night she walked out alone with a bucket of whitewash and painted every stake in the ring a pale, sorry grey, so the wood would know it had been seen. At dawn she found the trees had not moved an inch. The tent was gone with the crowd, and what remained was a clearing where the light came down through the needles in small, scattered coins, fewer each year.
