Pine tree silhouette on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a solid black conifer tree tattoo on a forearm, with a tapering crown of layered branches and a long, thin trunk line running down towards the wrist. The canopy is filled with dark ink and the trunk is a fine single line, giving a simple, graphic contrast against the skin. The background is dark and a person in a white top and dark jeans is partly visible, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Tom,

The river has been sulking since the thaw, so we tied up below Harlow Lock and I walked up the towpath to see if the old Scots pine was still standing. It is. Someone has hung a tin bucket from its lowest branch, and the crown looks like a hand held up against the sky, every spray of needles frayed at the edges as if the wind has been picking at it for a hundred years.

Dad always said you could tell which pines had weathered a hard winter by how thin they grew. All their strength went into one straight line, reaching for the light, and the branches only came where there was room. I thought about that standing there with the barge knocking softly against the piles behind me and Mother's kettle already steaming on the stove.

Then the lockkeeper's boy came along with a bow saw over his shoulder, and I shouted before I could think. He laughed and said the council wanted it down before it came over onto the lock gates. I told him I would buy the gates a new beam myself if he touched a single branch. He didn't believe me, and I'm not sure I believed me either, but he left the saw leaning in the reeds and went off whistling.

I'm writing this on the back of the rent book, so forgive the state of it. If you can get home by Easter, bring the good chisel and your patience. We'll need someone to tell the council that the tree was on this bank before the lock, and that it has been tied to the same mud for longer than any of us.

Love, Jo
