Pink 3D butterfly on upper back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A woman with her blonde hair up in a bun is photographed from behind, showing a tattoo of a butterfly on her upper back near the shoulder blade. The butterfly has pink wings with black edging and white dots, and it is shaded to appear raised off the skin, with a soft dark shadow beneath it. The plain light grey background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the bare skin.

Dear Ilse,

The lab on Deck Nine finally let me take the last moth out of its drawer, and I have spent the afternoon deciding whether I am allowed to call it a butterfly. Mr Okonedo says the old word belongs to the orchard domes, where the real ones still beat their wings against the glass. This one is a print from the seed-bank archive, a pink monarch so faithful to its drawing that the sensor kit hums when I hold it near the lamp. Its shadow is the strange part. The archive note says the mechanicians threw that dark smudge onto the sheet behind the wings on purpose, so the insect seems to hover a finger's width above the paper.

Thinking about that shadow made me remember the boy who used to sweep the hydroponics ring, the one who swore the moths on the pipes lifted away from their own shadows every time the lamps swung. Nobody believed him. I half did, because I had seen it myself, and I have never told anyone that I went back the next shift to check whether the lamps were the cause.

They were not. I think the shadow is simply how things look when they are about to leave.

Your mother will want to know whether the print can come home with me. Tell her yes, if she signs the form in red and not in black, because the clerks have become particular about colour. I will bring it up on the next transfer, wrapped in the blue cloth you sent, and we can hang it above the kettle where the light falls right.

Yours in haste, Mara
