Pink blossom branch across a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A back-angled view of a shoulder and upper arm with several cherry blossom flowers in soft pink and red, plus two closed buds on thin dark stems. The petals use soft, blended shading with light washes and no hard black outlines, giving a painterly, watercolour look. The design wraps over the shoulder point and fades toward the blurred brick wall behind.

The orchard was white with frost the morning Dad sent me up the ladder with the pruning saw, and I told him the old Morello was finished. He said it would blossom in April regardless, the way it always had, and that I should stop being so certain of things before breakfast. I climbed anyway. It was easier than arguing with him in the cold.

Winter pruning is mostly deciding what to lose. I took out the grey limbs split in the autumn gale and cleared the suckers from below the graft, but I left the thin whippy wood at the tips alone, as Dad had taught me. He said the tree would tell you what it wanted if you stood still long enough. So I stood still. My breath hung in front of me, and a robin landed on the wheelbarrow handle to watch me as if I owed it an explanation.
That afternoon, in the tool shed, I found Mum's old tin of watercolour pans, the lid rusted at one corner and a brush wrapped in newspaper from 1987. Inside was a sheet of cartridge paper curled at the edges. Dad had painted the blossom on the back of the milk-room door every spring, wet on wet, before the petals could fall, and he never sold one picture. In the corner of this sheet he had sketched two closed buds on thin dark stems and written underneath in his square capitals: 'KEEP FOR APRIL'.
In April the top limbs broke out pink exactly where I had cut them. I wet the brush from the jam jar, tipped in the faded red, and painted the flowers on the milk-room door beside his, letting the colour bleed out toward the brick where the paint ran thin. The two buds I left unfinished, stems trailing off the wood, so the spring rain could finish them.
