White rose cluster on a shoulder blade
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of white five-petalled flowers with dark stamens, shaded green leaves, a pale blue-grey bud and small orange dots scattered around the design. Fine black outlines define the petals and leaves, with soft shading and light tonal blending inside the forms. The bouquet is arranged diagonally across the shoulder blade, with a few stems curling out toward the edges of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The hedge at Harrow Lane came into flower the week after you left, all at once, as if somebody had shouted. I went up on Tuesday with the secateurs and the tin you gave me, meaning to take cuttings for Mr Ashby's garden, and I stood in the lane for an hour with my hands full of nothing. Five petals each, white as the inside of a shell, and the stamens crowded in the middle like a fistful of dark pins. The hips are still green. The bees don't seem to mind.
Mr Ashby came round the corner with his dog and asked what I was doing. I told him I was counting. He thought I meant the blooms and said there were nine hundred if there was one. I didn't correct him. I was counting the orange specks on the leaves, the little rust-coloured spots where the rain sits, because you said once that the wild ones always carry a spot of something bright so the insects know where to land.
I've pressed the best of them between the pages of Mother's almanac, the one with the broken spine. When you come back at Michaelmas you can have the blue one, the bud I found on the far side of the stile that wouldn't open for anyone. I left it there to see if it would manage by morning. It had, a little, when I walked past again, the petals curled back like a question. I didn't pick it.
