Colour tattoo of a pink blossom branch with green leaves running down the side of the ribs, with shaded brown branches.

Pink blossom branch down the side ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A branch of pink blossoms with green leaves and shaded brown twigs climbs from the lower side of the torso up towards the top of the frame. The petals use soft pink tones with fine highlights and darker centres, while the leaves and branches are rendered with smooth shading for a realistic, dimensional look. The design wraps along the curve of the ribs, and a partial hand is visible at the top right edge of the frame.

Dear Tom, the branch you grafted on the old peach in March has come out all at once, the way your father always said it would, so that the whole wall by the wash-house looks like someone has spilt a tin of rose paint up the trellis. Mrs Pryce from the cottage came over with her secateurs this morning and stood under it for a full five minutes without saying a word, which for her is practically a sermon.

I have been out with the ladder most evenings. The blossom is soft on the outside and darker in the middle, and if you hold a flower up to the light you can see the veins like the lines on a tiny hand. The leaves are coming in narrow and bright, greener than you would think a leaf could be. The twigs underneath are still brown and a bit cross-looking, as if they have not forgiven the knife.

The wild plum rootstock keeps sending up suckers from the base. Every week I cut them off, and every week they come back, which your father said was the rootstock's way of reminding you where you came from. I have stopped being sentimental about it. I took the best of the spring cuttings and wrapped them in wet newspaper in a jam jar on the windowsill.

Come up on the Saturday train and take one back to London with you. Bring a proper pot this time, not that tin you used last year.

Love, Gran.
