In the village of Hollin Ford, the dance hall stood at the edge of the old orchard, and every spring the men who worked the cider presses swore the cherry trees bloomed only so the fiddlers would have something to look at through the windows. Nobody thought much of it until Ada Crane came back from the city with no sweetheart and a letter she never read aloud.

On the first Saturday of May she walked into the hall carrying a single branch wrapped in wet sacking. Her mother had told her not to bring it indoors, because blossom cut for dancing never lasts past the last waltz. Ada set it in a jug by the stove anyway. The fiddler, old Tobias Reeve, played a slow reel, and the dancers moved along the boards in pairs, and one by one the petals loosened and drifted down onto the floor.

By midnight the boards were pink with them. Ada danced with the miller's boy, then with the vicar, then with nobody, turning in the middle of the room while the petals settled in her wake. Those who stayed late said the stems were grey as wet slate by the end, and that she laughed the whole time, though no one could say at what.

In the morning the hall was swept, but the sweepings were kept in a flour sack and carried out to the orchard. Ada left on the early coach with the empty jug on her knee. The trees bloomed again the following spring, and nobody in Hollin Ford ever asked her where she had cut the branch.
