Pink cartoon owl on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A small, round, fluffy owl with large blue eyes and tufted feathers sits on the outer upper arm. The fur is rendered in soft pink shading with darker grey detailing on the wings, feet and tail. The arm is shown against a pale floral background, with the torso and a floral top cropped at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourselves down, the lot of you, and mind the coal dust on that bench. There was an owl in the winding house at Hollin Pit the year the big seam flooded. Not a proper owl, mind. Round as a dumpling, pink as a bon-bon, with eyes like two saucers of washing-up water, and feathers standing up on its head as if it had been out in a gale and never combed them.

Nobody knew where it came from. The lamp man said it hatched out of a tin of Mrs Ackroyd's rhubarb custard, and the deputy said it had lost its way off the moors. What it liked was the pithead clock. It would perch on the hands at five to six every shift and blink at the men coming up the cage, as if it were counting them. Eleven came up each morning for a fortnight after the water came in, and the owl counted them twice.

Then came the morning the cage stuck at the three-hundred-foot mark with Tommy Pell still below, his tally board under one arm. The men gathered at the top, grey-faced, and nobody said a word. The owl flapped down off the clock, landed on the drum, and started hooting in a voice like a rusty gate. It kept at it until the rope went slack and the cage came up with Tommy sitting in it, laughing, having dozed off against a bucket of cold tea.

So when you hear a clock tick at a pithead, lads, have a look up. And if you see a fat pink thing with its eyes wide open, count yourselves. It'll want to know you're all home. Now pass that cup over, my throat's like the bottom of the shaft.
