Forget-me-nots and white blossoms on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A cluster of large white flowers with yellow centres sits among small clusters of blue forget-me-not blooms, with green leaves and thin stems trailing downwards. The petals and leaves are shaded softly with blended tones, giving a painterly, almost watercolour look. The arrangement is coloured in blues, greens, yellows and whites, and the spray is set vertically on the outer upper arm against a plain grey sleeve and white background.

Dear Nell, the lane behind the vicarage has gone to seed since you left, but the wild cherry is still throwing its blossom over the wall, and I have been picking the forget-me-nots from under the hedge the way you taught me, one stem at a time so the roots stay in the earth. Mrs Pelling thinks I am mad. She saw me kneeling in the nettles yesterday with a jam jar and asked whether I was looking for a lost ring. I said I was looking for something blue that does not fade.

The white flowers you asked about are the single roses from the old bush by the coal shed. Your father cut the last of them the week before the funeral, and I could not bear to put them in the bin, so I pressed them between the pages of the atlas on the landing. They have gone the colour of weak tea, but the yellow middles are still there if you hold the page to the window. I have enclosed one. Do not let the postman bend it.
I sat on the back step this morning and tried to draw the whole spray the way you would have, with the stems trailing down and the little blue clusters crowded at the top like they are whispering to each other. My drawing looks like a fly has walked across it. Still, I kept going until the milk was on the doorstep and the light had come round to the bench.
Come home at Easter if you can. Bring your wretched paints. The forget-me-nots will be out again by then, and I would like to show you where they grow thickest, under the gate, where nobody mows.
With all my love, Mum.
