Pink peony and purple florals on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A bouquet of flowers wraps up the outside of a lower leg, led by a large pink peony with a yellow centre. Purple lisianthus, a pale poppy, blue-violet crocus and small red berries sit among green leaves and dried seed heads. The soft shading and delicate outlines give a painterly finish, and the blurred background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The seed archive on Halden Station has been sealed for ninety years, and you are the only one still allowed to open its cold drawers. Tonight the lamp hums over the steel shelves, and the labels in your mother's handwriting ask you to be careful. You lift a folder of pressed specimens: a peony gone the colour of weak tea, a lisianthus with its petals folded like unsent letters, a crocus stiff as wire.

Station rules say every specimen must be logged before it is composted or sent down to the greenhouse ring. But the ledger is only a list of what the old world kept, and nobody has added a line since the hydroponics fire. You slide out the pale poppy envelope, with its papery pod and seed dust, and hold it against the light panel until the veins show like a river map.

Down in the ring, the bees the engineers carried up from Earth in a jar are finally fat enough to work. You walk the beds with a brush and a paper cone of ground seed, dusting pollen where the ports are open. Berries redden on the lowest shelf, the first fruit in six years, and the night crew stops to watch them the way people once watched sunsets. Nobody asks what you were doing in the vault.

At the end of the shift you open the ledger to its last page and write one new line under the old columns: one peony, pink as dawn over Halden, sown in the north bed. Beneath it, in your own hand, you add the word still.
