A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed-keeper of Hollin Reach had one rule for the children who came to her door in the thaw: take what you can carry, and leave the ground as you found it. Tamsin, who was nine and had walked three days from the salt flats, did not argue. She only held out her cupped hands and waited while the old woman filled them with dry grey seeds from a tin that had once held tea.

The seed-keeper showed her the daisies first, the small ones with yellow buttons, because they came up anywhere and asked for nothing. Then the poppies, whose papery heads rattled like coins when they dried. Then the wild roses, which would only open where the wind had been kind and the bees had been patient. Tamsin asked why anyone would plant things that were so hard to keep. The seed-keeper said the hard ones were the reason she bothered at all.

When the girl left, the seed-keeper stood at the gate and watched the path until it bent behind the ridge. Then she went back inside and sat by the window, where a single yellow daisy grew in a crack of the sill, its grey-shadowed petals turned toward the road. She did not pick it. She had never once picked the flowers she was given to look after, and she had no intention of starting now.
