Pink roses and black brushstrokes on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A forearm tattoo shows several pink roses and rosebuds with green leaves and stems wrapping up the arm. The roses are shaded with soft gradations of pink, while the leaves have layered green tones. Loose black brushstroke and ink splash elements sit among the flowers, contrasting with the colour of the petals.

Come closer, the rain is only passing through, it does not mean to stay. You want the story of the Rose Woman of the Thursday market, the one who sold roses from a tin bucket when every other stall had shut its shutters. My grandmother knew her. She said the woman never gave change, only flowers, and that a rose given in place of coins would bloom longer than any bought with them.

One grey Thursday a boy came running through the stalls with a black brush in his fist, the kind the sign-painters carried. He had painted the church gate that morning and been scolded for it, and now he was daring the market to take his mess. He swept the brush across the Rose Woman's wooden crate in one long stroke, and the ink spat up in a little cloud of dark spots onto her apron and the wet cobbles. She did not shout. She picked up the brush, dipped it in the puddle, and drew a single line of black through the air above the boy's head, the way a swallow cuts across a field. Where the line crossed the grey sky it left a stem, and off the stem came leaves, and off the leaves came roses, pink as the inside of a shell.
The boy ran home with his arm full of blossoms that smelled of rain and ink. Nobody in the market could say which of them had been punished. My grandmother always said the Rose Woman was selling him something after all, though she never told him the price. Mind your step on the way out. The cobbles are slick, and the ink, if you find it, is still wet.
