Peony and daisy bouquet on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A bouquet of flowers is tattooed on the inner forearm near the wrist, centred on a large red peony with layered petals. White daisies with yellow centres sit on the left and top, with clusters of small blue and white blossoms and dark green leaves filling the gaps. The bold black outlines and flat, solid fills give it a classic illustrative look, and the design is set against a pale, textured bedsheet with a hand resting below it.

The officer at the booth wants to know what is in the boxes stacked on your passenger seat. Peonies don't travel well, you tell him, and they don't care for questions. He sighs, pulls one box toward him and lifts the damp newspaper with two fingers, the way you'd lift a lid off something that might bite.

The red peony comes up first, heavy as a fist, its petals folded over each other like a stack of pressed velvet. Then the daisies with their yellow eyes, the blue blossoms crowding the gaps as though they've been shoved to the back of a photograph. He asks what they're for. You say a wedding in Lille, a bride called Marguerite who ordered forty stems and then rang you twice to haggle over the price. None of this is true. You invented Marguerite in the queue, somewhere between the vending machine and the man with the sleeping toddler.

He radios someone in a language you half understand, then waves you forward to the second window, where a woman in a grey cardigan asks you to choose a single stem for the duty tray. You pick a daisy, the one with the best centre, and she nods as if it's the answer she expected. At the barrier the arm lifts, and you drive on with the bouquet breathing cold air through the paper. By the time the motorway signs switch to French, a dark stain has spread across the seat where one peony stem has bled its colour into the paper, and you let it be.
