Realistic pink roses with green leaves and a small script quote tattooed across a woman's shoulder and upper chest.

Pink roses and script on shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

Two pink roses with green leaves sit over the shoulder and upper chest, with a thin black script line reading "Enjoy the little things" beside them. The roses are rendered with soft shading and blended pink and red tones, while the leaves and script add contrast. The photo is cropped to the shoulder and chest, with a grey striped top below the tattoo.

Sit down, you'll not hear the kettle from there. Right. The Harrow House had eleven rooms and one rose bush, and that bush was the only thing Edith Pell would not let the sea have. Salt got into everything else. The sheets went stiff, the banister went green, the piano keys stuck. But the two pink roses by the back wall kept flowering, because she gave them the washing-up water and nothing else.

Now, the summer the Lindqvist brothers came, the younger one, Teodor, was a clerk from Leeds with a face like a fresh-ironed collar, and he spent three weeks telling anyone who'd sit still how he meant to be rich by Michaelmas. He'd bought a motor car he couldn't drive. He kept a notebook of figures. Every evening he'd stand at the gate and say, 'Mrs Pell, when I've made my fortune I'll buy you a conservatory.' She'd say, 'Mind the step.'

On the last morning he came down with his case and found her out in the yard with a pair of secateurs, cutting the best bloom for the breakfast table. He asked why she was cutting the one thing she'd have been sad to lose. She said, 'Because they're out now, love. Tomorrow they'll be over.' He laughed at her, the way young men do, and then he didn't, because she'd written on the back of his bill in her round hand: Enjoy the little things.

He never did make his fortune. Years later, so I'm told, a card came to the house with a rose pressed flat inside it and nothing else written. Edith kept it in the drawer with the spare keys. Now, pass me that cup.
