Roses and lace across a shoulder and upper arm
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo covers the shoulder and upper arm with a red rose on the upper chest and shoulder, framed by black lace-pattern florals. Down the upper arm, larger grey roses are shaded with soft tonal gradients and sit within the same black lace motifs. The dark background isolates the artwork, with warm skin tones and the red ink providing the main contrast.

You are the last person aboard Harrow Deep who still knows how to work a bobbin, so the hydroponic council sends you the frayed collars and cracked lace of the dead. Tonight it is a sleeve of black Chantilly-pattern, eleven metres of it, rolled inside a biscuit tin that smells of cold tea and the metallic breath of the air filters.

The pattern card is punched with a rose at its centre, and someone has inked the petals in red over the pinholes. You check the ledger: Ilse Varga, dockside tailor, year 2231, marked 'for the Ferrier wedding, colour to follow.' Colour never followed. The ferrier's boy went out on the cargo tug and did not come back, and the card was filed under lace instead of mourning.
You work through the night. Black thread for the leaves and the open lattice, grey for the roses' shadows, where the tone must soften like breath on glass. The red you save until last, because Ilse saved it. When you reach the petals you notice her pinholes sit a little closer together than the rest, as if her hands shook, or as if she wanted the red to be thicker than the design needed.
By dawn the sleeve hangs from the mender's hook, black lace over grey roses, and at the shoulder a single red bloom you cannot unsee. You fold the card back into the tin, write 'colour: completed' in your own hand, and file it under the wedding. Some debts take two hundred years to pay, and the ledger has never asked who paid them.
