Pink watercolour bloom on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a pink, petal-like bloom with a sweeping green stem and a few dark accents, set against pale skin. The shading is soft and painterly, with loose edges and blended pinks, rather than hard outlines. The bloom sits off-centre on the inner forearm, with a stone wall visible in the background.

Mind the lip of that lock, love, the stones go green in the spring. Now sit where I can see you, because this is the bit my father never told straight. He painted roses on every cabin side from Stourport down to Gloucester, and he never once used a pencil. People will tell you a rose wants a black outline. He'd take the pipe out of his teeth and say they had never looked at a petal in the rain.

The year the Severn came over the towpath, he had a half pot of rose pink mixed for the *Harriet*, a narrowboat belonging to a widow called Mrs Pryce, who wanted her name in gold on the tiller. The weather turned on him. Rain came sideways off the water and ran down the cabin side before the paint could set, so the pink went soft at the edges and bled into the green he'd laid in for the stem.
He stood on the bank with a wet rag and a jam jar of river water, and he let it run. Where the brush had dragged he dabbed dark spots, the way you'd mark a bruise on fruit. He said the river had done the work and he had only kept his hands out of its way. Mrs Pryce came down in her coat, saw the bloom, and cried. It wasn't because it was pretty. She said it looked like something that had come through a flood and was still standing.
The cabin was scrubbed back to bare planks years later, and the paint went with it. I kept the rag. It's stiff now, crusted pink, with a little tide mark round the hem. Hold it up to the lamp, and you'll see the water still in it.
