Small pink butterfly on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small butterfly tattoo sits on the forearm, with its wings filled in pink and outlined in black. Two dark dots with curled tails sit beside the body, suggesting antennae or eyes. The solid colour and clean outline are set against soft, evenly lit skin with a blurred background.

Mind the step, and mind the goat, for she has eaten two hats and a vicar's sermon, and she still thinks the candyfloss is hers. Now sit down, because this is the true tale of the pink moth of Dunsley Fair, and I was there when the lamps were lit and the last coconut shies were still rattling.

Ada Pell ran the coconut shy the summer the carousel lost its lion. She was nineteen, quick with her hands and quicker with her tongue, and every evening a butterfly came to the gaslamp above her stall. Not a moth, mind. A butterfly the colour of cheap sweets, with wings like cut silk. Nobody else saw it. The men swore it was the lamp's reflection, and the lamp swore nothing at all.
She began leaving it sugar on the counter. It came for the sugar and sat on the brass rail, and its two black spots, with their little curled tails, seemed to watch her count the change. Ada said they were the only honest eyes on the whole ground, which was true, because the rest of the fair was thieves and the strongman.
When the fair struck camp that September, the butterfly rode off on the roof of her cart, pink against the canvas, and nobody saw it leave. Some say she sold up in Carlisle and went to sea. I say a moth that lives on sugar won't take a ship's wind. Every spring since, a pink wing turns up on the lamp at Dunsley, and the goat, who is wiser than the vicar, always bows to it.
