Pirate ship with skull flag on the side
Traditional · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A three-masted sailing ship with full cream and grey sails sits on a teal and blue hull trimmed with gold. A black flag bearing a white skull and crossbones flies from the top of the mast, and blue waves break along the base. The shading is soft on the sails and rigging, and the composition runs diagonally up the skin.

You tie the last sail down at Scarrow Cay with the tide already turning, and Mags Doyle is shouting from the longboat that the Greyhen's cutter has been sighted off the reef. The hull is still wet from careening, the copper sheathing gleaming where you scraped it, and the gold leaf on the transom catches the low sun. You do not look back at the flag. Old Pell hoisted it at dawn, the black cloth with its grinning skull, and it cracks above you like a warning nobody on the island needs repeated.

The plan was simple, which is why it had lasted three days of arguing. Take the Greyhen's cargo of salt cod and ship timber before her crew noticed the sails, then run south past the shoals where no navy man would follow. You were to take the wheel. Mags had made you swear it on the ship's bell, a strange oath for a woman who once threw a priest overboard for singing. You turned the wheel a half-point and felt the hull answer, teal water sliding under the bow.
The cutter came out of the haze at noon, and it did not fire. It simply sat there, close enough that you could read the name painted on her stern, and a man in a blue coat raised a glass. Pell laughed until he coughed. "He's counting our sails," he said. "Let him count. A ship with a full set of canvas and a skull at her masthead is only ever as honest as her captain's nerve."
So you let the wind take you west, away from the shoals and toward the open grey where the waves break white against the bow. Behind you the cutter grew smaller, the cay became a green smudge, and by evening the only thing on the horizon was your own wake, curling like a ribbon of gold. Mags never said a word about the wheel. She just tapped the bell once, twice, and went below to find the rum.
