Sailing ship on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A three-masted sailing ship with full sails and a pennant fills the centre of the design, with a smaller vessel and a lighthouse-like tower near the left edge. The linework is fine and the shading is soft and detailed, with smoke-like clouds and choppy waves framing the ship. The tattoo is entirely black and grey and is shown on the back of a hand against a dark background.

The squall had been building since noon, and by the time Ada Penrose climbed the wet steps to the lamp room the sea was throwing spray over the mole as if it had a grudge. Below her the harbour was empty except for one ship, three masts standing dark against the cloud, making for the gap in the rocks with every sail still set.

Nobody had seen the Constance Vale in twenty years. Her father used to say she went down off the Lantern Reef with her crew at their stations, and that she came back on the anniversary of every bad blow to show the town she had not forgotten the way in. Ada had laughed at him for it. She was not laughing now, with her hands on cold brass and the wick trimmed too short.

She lit the lamp anyway. The beam swung out across the water and, for one breath, the ship's pennant lifted and snapped clear in the wind, dry as paper, and the sails came about. The ship slid past the breakwater close enough that Ada could read the name on her stern, and then the squall closed over her like a curtain.

At dawn the mole was empty and the lamp had burnt down to nothing. Ada found a single wet rope coiled neatly on the bottom step, tied with a sailor's knot her father had taught her, and she kept it on the sill of the lamp room ever since, where the salt could dry on it.
